Bangkok has come a long way from the small village which bore its name in the 15th century. As it was located on the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, the area soon grew in importance and even became the site of a famous siege in 1688 when Siam expelled the French. Bangkok was made Thailand’s capital in 1782 and has expanded in size ever since. Water is at the heart of the city with the canals deemed to be as important as the streets. This is why Bangkok has gained the sobriquet: ‘Venice of the East’.

Perhaps it is no surprise to learn that the Praya Palazzo boutique hotels Bangkok also has a distinct Italian influence just like the capital. The hotel is actually a mansion that was first built in 1923. Praya Chollabhumipanish was a member of King Rama V’s court and he was greatly influenced by contemporary Italian art. The mansion was specially built on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. This is great news for our guests who stay within easy walking distance of Bangkok’s jewel. (more…)

As Thailand’s capital, Bangkok also has its most powerful economy. In fact, the city’s economic output is estimated at more than 35% of Thailand’s entire GDP. There is some confusion over this figure but the estimate stems from the fact that Bangkok accounts for 75% of Thailand’s service sector which in itself is responsible for 45% of the nation’s GDP.

Thailand’s stock exchange can be found in Bangkok with 27 international financial institutions from around the world having their Thai (and often their South-East Asian) headquarters in the city. Bangkok is known for having a relatively low cost of living which is why so many international companies are keen to set up companies here. It is possible for them to recruit university educated Thai staff for a fraction of what they would cost in Europe or North America.

One of the most impressive things about Bangkok’s economy is the way in which it has responded to global and national economic turmoil. The Thai economy essentially collapsed in the mid-1990s as exports rapidly dwindled. Such is Thailand’s economic importance that a large part of Asia suffered from the after effects of this crisis. The much publicized global economic downturn did find its way to Thailand again recently but Bangkok has managed to stand firm in the face of these problems. (more…)

Cultural attractions in Bangkok  although Bangkok is known as one of the party capitals of the world, the cultural attractions on offer are a match for any other city in the world. A prime example of this is the Ancient City in Samut Prakan which is an extraordinary creation located on the outskirts of the city. The Ancient City is contained within 320 acres of landscaped gardens and contains scaled down replicas of Thailand’s most important structures. There are more than 100 monuments within the Ancient City with some depicting buildings that no longer exist. This homage to Thai architecture and history is one of the most remarkable projects ever carried out in the country and must be visited by tourists.

Great Swing
The Wat Sutat temple in Bangkok is the home of the ‘Great Swing’. The huge swing still stands proudly in front of the temple but it has not been used since 1932. When it was in use, the swing was where young men celebrated a successful harvest. Brave (and foolhardy) men sat on the swing which took them as high as 80 feet in the air before they tried to grab a bag of coins with their teeth. As one might expect, accidents, injuries and fatalities occurred which led to that aspect of the ceremony being cancelled. Nonetheless, the harvest ceremony is still celebrated in less dangerous fashion in December. (more…)

When you visit Bangkok, you are duty bound to sample the local cuisine. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you’ve had Thai food before. The food you eat back home is just a ‘Westernized’ version that does not contain all of the authentic spices and flavor or real Thai cuisine. The Bangkok marketplace has an array of local dishes but if you wish to dine in style, try the Praya Palazzo boutique hotel in Bangkok ‘s menu.

Spicy Shrimp Soup
of the most famous of all Thai dishes is Tom Yum Goong, otherwise known as spicy shrimp soup. It is a cavalcade of flavor with fragrant herbs and spices such as lemon grass, chili pepper, shallot and tamarind added to fresh prawns and mushrooms. The overall impact on your taste buds is nothing short of sensational. It is generally used as a starter but with the addition of rice, you have yourself a worthy main course.

Chicken & Cashew Nuts
Another signature Thai dish brought to you by the Praya Palazzo boutique hotel Bangkok is chicken with cashew nuts. One may think that this meal would be too mild to be Thai with some diners even mistaking it for a Chinese dish because it is sweet and salty. However, it is unmistakably Thai and once you sample the chicken, cashews, carrots, onions and sweet soy sauce, you won’t care where it originates from because you’ll be too busy cleaning the plate! The people of Bangkok take every opportunity to celebrate life and have a number of festivals throughout the year. The Songkran festival is the most famous example of this. The term Songkran comes from the Sanskrit language and literally means ‘astrological passage’. The significance of this festival is that it celebrates the Thai New Year. It is celebrated throughout the nation beginning on April 13 and concluding on April 15 after three days of jubilant celebration. Such is the magic of the Songkran festival that it is also celebrated in Laos, Cambodia and Burma though Thailand and in particular, Bangkok, plays host to the most memorable celebrations annually.

If you happen to be in Bangkok during the Songkran, we hope that you don’t mind getting wet because the throwing of water is the chief method of celebration. Of course, tourists are likely to revel in the soothing relief of water because Bangkok is extremely warm in April. The public see Songkran as a time of cleaning which means old and useless possessions must be disposed of lest they bring misfortune to their owner. (more…)

A mistake that tourists often make is to assume that all hotels and all locations within Bangkok were created equal. Anyone who has ever stayed at the Praya Palazzo boutique hotel Bangkok will tell you that there is a world of difference between a boutique hotel and an establishment which is part of a chain. Also, comparing riverside to Sukhumvit is akin to saying the moon and the sun are one and the same.

Even luxury hotel chains offer little in the way of individuality or uniqueness. Frankly, if you’ve stayed in one hotel of a chain you’ve stayed in them all. From Paris to Los Angeles to Bangkok, hotel chains never change. You have the same décor, the same rooms and the same service. The only thing different is the view and even then, you’re often stuck in a city center looking at busy streets and a cloudy sky.

At the Praya Palazzo boutique hotel in Bangkok, you will encounter something altogether different. We don’t see you as a walking credit card, we see you as an individual. When you tell us what you need, we ensure that your heart’s desires are met. From the moment we greet you at the airport (if requested) to the time we bid you a fond farewell, you will be our most esteemed guest. We have 17 rooms and each guest is treated equally. We have no single VIP’s because all our customers are valued. (more…)
